My grandÂfaÂther worked until he couldÂnât any more.
Heâd work full shifts as a taiÂlor three days a week until after he turned 80. They evenÂtuÂalÂly had to ask him to retire.
I get it.
But I also underÂstand wanÂderÂing. Dabbling.
It seems that the fastest growÂing group of employed Americans is the elderÂly.
The future of work
I believe that the way we work is regressÂing to how work used to be among âintelÂlecÂtuÂalsâ. Work is going to be project based with peoÂple buildÂing portÂfoÂlios around the expeÂriÂence they want to be known for. Theyâll explore new areas of interÂest, figÂure out how to turn them into projects, and grow their careers non-linÂearÂly (as opposed to âclimbÂing a career ladÂderâ.
I read an interÂestÂing book, Descent, that informed how I underÂstand the future of work. In the book, Otis Barton inventÂed the divÂing bell durÂing one of his âadvenÂturesâ. Otis was an heir to a conÂsidÂerÂable forÂtune, and the way he âworkedâ is worth notÂing.
Disrupting work
When techÂnolÂoÂgy took 20 years to difÂfuse itself into our lives, one could have a lifeÂtime career doing someÂthing. Think TV, or autoÂmoÂbiles, or conÂstrucÂtion techÂnolÂoÂgy. Now, things are movÂing at a much faster pace. If you worked at Nokia a decade ago, your expeÂriÂence is outÂdatÂed.
Change is only going to accelÂerÂate. Millennials are expectÂed to have 14 jobs over their career. Theyâre going to have to learn how to adapt.
Weâre all going to learn how to adapt.
Part of that adapÂtaÂtion is the âside husÂtleâ, either to gain expeÂriÂence or (as in my case) as a creÂative outÂlet.
Hustlers look at life through difÂferÂent activÂiÂty (or revÂenue) streams.
Thatâs where the Elephantâs Paycheck comes in; as a way to have my portÂfoÂlio align to my side-husÂtle attiÂtude by focusÂing on the income it genÂerÂates and how that income will grow over time.
I may work long into retireÂment, but itâll be my choice as it was my Grandfatherâs.
To get there, I save. I invest. I stay so focused on buildÂing wealth that Iâve actuÂalÂly writÂten a book. Thatâs focus!
