Mabel over at Girls on the Money wonÂdered out loud over the weekÂend:
Recently interÂactÂed with some 5th and 6th graders. Asked them if they knew what the stock marÂket was and was givÂen a blank stare đ. I canât say I didnât expect that but it made me wonÂder â what is a good age to introÂduce this topÂic? Most imporÂtantÂly â HOW can it be introÂduced?

Iâve often giftÂed stock (Stockpile gift cards are a great) to close friendsâ kids so Iâve seen kids as young as 7 or 8 years old realÂize what that means to own part of a comÂpaÂny. (It means theyâre going to want to shop at âtheirâ comÂpaÂnies!)
The impliÂcaÂtion being that one way to introÂduce investÂing to kids is simÂply to get them startÂed, and then talk to them about it. Thatâs a one-on-one effort though.
More broadÂly, by earÂly teens kids should defÂiÂniteÂly be exposed to investÂing in a group/classroom setÂting. And while fracÂtionÂal stock ownÂerÂship is a great way to get startÂed, and getÂting startÂed is much betÂter than talkÂing about getÂting startÂed, stock ownÂerÂship is just a small porÂtion of what it means to learn about investÂing.
Why Invest?
Iâd think you can phrase learnÂing about investÂing as to the âwhyâsâ:
- Saving for long terms goals, like ownÂing a home
- Saving for emerÂgenÂcies, like being out of work
- (My favorite) The idea that monÂey makes monÂey, so if you learn to invest, youâll earn more than you can just by workÂing
This could make a great disÂcusÂsion topÂic because we can teach kids to think long term, to set goals, to reach for their dreams.
Curriculum
Then, Iâd walk through the âmonÂey jourÂneyâ peoÂple expeÂriÂence.
- They earn monÂey
- They keep monÂey close at hand to pay for regÂuÂlar expensÂes
- They creÂate a budÂget so that they can save (weâve already givÂen them the âwhyâsâ)
- Options for savÂing long term; this might include stocks, bonds, real estate, startÂing a busiÂness
- Introduce ideas like liqÂuidÂiÂty, risk, inflaÂtion, and taxÂes (age depenÂdent, but these are some core topÂics); with risk you can introÂduce mutuÂal funds, with taxÂes â retireÂment savÂings, with inflaÂtion you can talk about why just putting it in the bank isnât a great idea
- Then Iâd get them startÂed. I think itâs so imporÂtant to actuÂalÂly do it rather than just talk about it. These days everyÂthing is so accesÂsiÂble. Though, I realÂize even small amounts of investÂing could be proÂhibÂiÂtive for many famÂiÂlies:
- They can use Stockpile to get startÂed with stocks for just $5 (and they have a great cusÂtoÂdiÂal impleÂmenÂtaÂtion for parÂents to engage their kids too),
- They can use peer-to-peer lendÂing for bond-like investÂing (I donât know much about this, so not sure what the minÂiÂmums are),
- They can run through a busiÂness plan for buyÂing a home and rentÂing it out, and/or
- They can build their own webÂsites and review a book or a toy to see if they can genÂerÂate some affilÂiÂate income.
Building Wealth
Money and investÂing are such big topÂics. Itâs realÂly hard to narÂrow things down, and explain them simÂply. Thereâs always more to say, and more caveats to explain. Money is not as black-and-white as you would think conÂsidÂerÂing itâs all about numÂbers and arithÂmetic.
That said, Iâd also proÂpose using the phrase âbuildÂing wealthâ instead of âinvestÂingâ. Iâd sepÂaÂrate wealth from income (and the job that earns the income). Itâs almost like balÂance sheet vs income stateÂment, though, that comÂparÂiÂson would be too borÂing though the idea could be interÂestÂing to explore.
Couples fight a lot about monÂey, and learnÂing to live beyond payÂcheck-to-payÂcheck reduces stress. Itâs not about the activÂiÂty of investÂing, but the goal of buildÂing wealth, havÂing âthe right amountâ of monÂey so that you can live a life with a litÂtle more qualÂiÂty, a litÂtle more safeÂty, than you had in the past. Thatâs how Iâve always viewed my wealth buildÂing activÂiÂty.
And itâs cerÂtainÂly worked for me.
Iâm curiÂous what youâd change on the above curÂricuÂlum. Let me know in the comÂments if you care to.
