Friction.
Thatās right, some divĀiĀdends have fricĀtion.
Of course, you a probĀaĀbly wonĀderĀing if thatās a good thing or not!
Itās good. Let me tell you why.
You see, we donāt want our divĀiĀdends to slide away into oblivĀion. We do want them to stick around. Friction keeps our divĀiĀdends in place, so we can conĀtinĀue to enjoy them year after year.
What is divĀiĀdend fricĀtion? Just like moveĀment-relatĀed fricĀtion preĀvents items from movĀing, divĀiĀdend fricĀtion preĀvents our divĀiĀdends from going anyĀwhere. So, anyĀthing that keeps our divĀiĀdends from being cut gives them fricĀtion.
A divĀiĀdend thatās been increased for many years in a row gives execĀuĀtives options. Before cutĀting the divĀiĀdend, they could skip an increase. Skipping an increase would be a negĀaĀtive indiĀcaĀtor (and from an Elephantās Paycheck perĀspecĀtive, probĀaĀbly indiĀcates that itās time to sell). However, skipĀping an increase is not the same as a cut divĀiĀdend, so at least our Elephantās Paycheck is preĀserved.
It would be difĀferĀent for a comĀpaĀny withĀout a track record of divĀiĀdend increasĀes to have a ādelayĀing tacĀticā like forĀgoĀing a divĀiĀdend raise. Since they donāt usuĀalĀly increase the divĀiĀdend, if things went south, the only option manĀageĀment has is to cut the divĀiĀdend.
Remember that handĀheld elecĀtronĀic footĀball game from the 80ās. The one with blips on the screen, that when youād run a runĀning play the blips would move with the runĀner ā opposĀing blips would canĀcel each othĀer out. Itās the same thing. You have an extra blip on the screen to throw against an opposĀing tackĀler before your runĀner is tackĀled ((I donāt usuĀalĀly make sports refĀerĀences, so hope Iām not embarĀrassĀing myself here!)), just like manĀageĀment has one extra tool to throw against disĀapĀpointĀing results before cutĀting the divĀiĀdend.
I thought of using the term āfricĀtionā with respect to divĀiĀdends in my guest post on the Retirement Income Blog, you should check it out.
