Now that I have actuÂal readÂers, Iâm learnÂing quite a bit about what Iâve writÂten and how itâs received.
This book may not be for youâŠ
Early in the process, I realÂized that I needÂed to ask myself âwhat is it about what Iâm sayÂing thatâs unique?â Certainly, there are tons of divÂiÂdend reinÂvestÂing books. Heck, I was readÂing them back in 1980 when I startÂed investÂing this way.
If there are a lot of books, and the investÂing tools Iâm talkÂing about arenât new, then a lot of peoÂple know how to invest the way I describe in The Elephant in the Room has a Paycheck. While I believe the metÂrics Iâve creÂatÂed are unique, and that theyâre helpÂful even for advanced investors, I susÂpect that peoÂple familÂiar with divÂiÂdend investing/reinvesting donât need the extra âfeel goodâ my metÂrics proÂvide.
So whoâs the book for?
It reminds me of a story
A good friend bought an iPad. He wantÂed to get one for his wife, but the peoÂple at her job were insisÂtent that the iPad was a âgimÂmickâ (just a big phone but withÂout the phone). Instead, they sugÂgestÂed she get a kinÂdle.
He tried conÂvincÂing her. Showed her what she could do; talked about the great techÂnolÂoÂgy; how it was the future. All to no avail.
As a techÂnolÂoÂgy perÂson, he had a deep appreÂciÂaÂtion for the iPad that she would nevÂer match. The more he pushed, the more she tuned him out.
In a final attempt, he drove her to Starbucks. They got cofÂfee and he dropped her at the Apple store to speak with the staff. Let them try.
I honÂestÂly donât rememÂber how the stoÂry endÂed. But thatâs not the point. The point is, there are things that peoÂple just donât appreÂciÂate learnÂing from their sigÂnifÂiÂcant othÂer. The hardÂer one pushÂes, the more they get shut out. Especially when it has to do with techÂnolÂoÂgy or math â subÂjects that peoÂple with experÂtise have trouÂble explainÂing to peoÂple withÂout the same backÂground.
âŠIt may be for your spouse
The breakÂdown of book purÂchasÂes is quite interÂestÂing. Itâs mostÂly women. Which is what Iâd expect conÂsidÂerÂing thatâs my tarÂget readÂer.
The feedÂback that I get from the women is around wantÂiÂng to start investÂing or wantÂiÂng to do more but not knowÂing how and not knowÂing where to get imparÂtial yet perÂsonÂal advice. Theyâre buyÂing the book for themÂselves.
In a bunch of casÂes though, the buyÂer has been a guy ((Every purÂchase has aligned by genÂder as far as I can tell. The guys have investÂing expeÂriÂence, the women want to know how to get startÂed. Itâs not a huge samÂple, but Iâm being litÂerÂalÂly in my use of proÂnouns.)). A guy thatâs been investÂing for a while. These are usuÂalÂly peoÂple I have worked with in tech â genÂerÂalÂly smart, eduÂcatÂed, and good with numÂbers. They bought the book more because I wrote it, than because they had some need to learn a new way to invest. They genÂerÂalÂly know I tell good stoÂries. (Thank you guys!)
In these casÂes the feedÂback was what I expectÂed. Something along the lines of âI knew this stuffâ.
Very interÂestÂingÂly, even those with advanced investÂing expeÂriÂence realÂly enjoyed the stoÂry. Not just for themÂselves, but because theyâre tryÂing to explain investÂing to their spouse whoâs just not that interÂestÂed.
The stoÂry I tell is a quick read and helps inexÂpeÂriÂenced investors underÂstand divÂiÂdend investÂing basics withÂout the comÂplexÂiÂty of traÂdiÂtionÂal (borÂing) investÂing books. Itâs good, readÂers say, for helpÂing to explain their investÂing stratÂeÂgy to othÂers.
Itâs the book verÂsion of âgoing to the Apple store with a latÂteâ and letÂting someÂone else do the explainÂing.
If you have a sigÂnifÂiÂcant othÂer who remains aloof from your famÂiÂlyâs finanÂcial portÂfoÂlio, The Elephant in the Room has a Paycheck makes a good gift for that last bit of sumÂmer beach readÂing weâll still have time for before September.
