One of the bits of negĀaĀtive feedĀback Iāve gotĀten of my book is about the tacĀtiĀcal how-to. Specifically, I recĀomĀmend a bit of an āold schoolā way to get startĀed. I recĀomĀmend using direct purĀchase plans.
In my mind, there are three broad ways to invest:
- Traditional broĀkerĀages
- Direct purĀchase plans
- Apps
Direct purchase plans vs traditional brokerages
Traditional broĀkerĀages are at sigĀnifĀiĀcant disĀadĀvanĀtage to direct purĀchase plans for those who I expect are in my tarĀget audiĀence with the excepĀtion of peoĀple who roll over their 401(k)ās to IRAs.
Direct purĀchase plans are easy to start, have very low startĀing balĀance requireĀments, and enable peoĀple to buy in dolĀlar amounts, rather than share amounts. Itās easĀiĀer to get startĀed if you can buy $25 of a stock rather than in round numĀber of shares (one share, two shares, etc). Direct purĀchase plans also have a way to autoĀmate small monthĀly purĀchasĀing, so you can build a wealth-buildĀing habit.
Recommending direct purĀchase plans over a broĀkerĀage for non-401K rollovers was an easy choice. As you will see in the review below, Stash aligns very niceĀly to the things I valĀued in choosĀing direct purĀchase plans as the way to get startĀed.
Direct purchase plans vs apps
Less easy was the choice to fail to menĀtion the app options.
What it came down to was simĀplicĀiĀty. I find that part of the chalĀlenge with investĀing is there are too many options. A corĀnerĀstone eleĀment of the Elephantās Paycheck Blueprint is narĀrowĀing down the selecĀtion of investĀment choicĀes to conĀserĀvĀaĀtive divĀiĀdend increasers (known as the Dividend Aristocrats).
Similarly, I wantĀed to narĀrow down the choicĀes for how to invest and proĀvide just one recĀomĀmenĀdaĀtion. Itās also ideĀal that direct purĀchase plans are the way I have startĀed for my own chilĀdren. (I startĀed this way too, but things were very difĀferĀent 30ā35 years ago when I did that!)
However, I donāt want to be conĀsidĀered out of touch with more modĀern options for getĀting startĀed. Especially since the options for getĀting startĀed with apps are good ones.
There are a lot of choicĀes, so I thought Iād try them and write up short reviews. Iāll evenĀtuĀalĀly conĀsolĀiĀdate them into one longer addenĀdum to the book.
Itās going to be a ranĀdom order, so donāt read into the order in which I review these soluĀtions.
That said, may I present my first ā Stash.
My secĀond ā Robinhood.
