How do you find good inforĀmaĀtion about divĀiĀdend stocks?
The thing is, staĀble divĀiĀdend payĀers someĀtimes tell you what their plans are. Not always, but often enough that itās imporĀtant to lisĀten. They might tell you that the divĀiĀdend is in jeopĀardy in order to minĀiĀmize Wall Streetās surĀprise should a divĀiĀdend cut be necĀesĀsary.
On the othĀer hand, they might tell you about their plans to increase the divĀiĀdend before theyāre ready to actuĀalĀly raise it. Iām not sure why theyād do that. Why not just raise the divĀiĀdend instead of telling us youāll raise it? I mean, othĀer than the obviĀous reaĀson that theyāre not ready to pay a highĀer divĀiĀdend until some point in the future so they canāt announce it until theyāre ready to pay it.
Take Spectra Energy for examĀple.
- In January, Spectra announced their plans to raise the divĀiĀdend at least Ā¢8/year for āthe next sevĀerĀal yearsā. (Look at the paraĀgraph right after the bulĀlets for that juicy bit of news.)
- In June, they announced their plans to increase that increase. The stock liked that news which was a good side-effect too!
- In November, they announced that theyāll increase the divĀiĀdend in time for the 2014 payĀments. They made the announceĀment with their 3rd quarĀter results. That link opens a PDF, do a search on divĀiĀdend to see the folĀlowĀing:
The drop-down also allows for a sigĀnifĀiĀcant divĀiĀdend increase at Spectra Energy and sigĀnifĀiĀcant increasĀes in Spectra Energy Partnersā disĀtriĀbĀuĀtions to unitholdĀers. The cash to Spectra Energy from its limĀitĀed partĀnerĀship and genĀerĀal partĀnerĀship disĀtriĀbĀuĀtions will supĀport Spectra Energyās abilĀiĀty to raise its annuĀal divĀiĀdend by 12 cents per year, effecĀtive in the first quarĀter of 2014, an annuĀal increase of about 10 perĀcent from 2013. Spectra Energy expects to conĀtinĀue annuĀal divĀiĀdend increasĀes at this levĀel through 2015.
Itās fasĀciĀnatĀing that they come out ahead of the increase to share details this speĀcifĀic. Is this news priced into the price of the stock? Most likeĀly. Unlike the June announceĀment, the raise wonāt likeĀly cause the stock to jump. However, at ~$35/share a Ā¢12 raise from $1.22 to $1.34 in January means that the true yield is 3.83% ($1.34/$35) not 3.49% ($1.22/$35). That makes a difĀferĀence. Itās good to know that your Elephantās Paycheck will be increasĀing niceĀly.
This is the sort of finanĀcial news you should be readĀing, not the crap on TV that makes investĀing more like a sport than a disĀciĀpline.
That said, last year Spectra increased their divĀiĀdend in late 2012, payable in December 2012. This yearās increase (in January or February 2014) payable in March, means the increase is comĀing a quarĀter latĀer than it did last year. Thatās a litĀtle disĀapĀpointĀing.
